The Law and Sin
7 What shall we say, then? Is the law sinful? Certainly not! Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”[b] 8 But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of coveting. For apart from the law, sin was dead. 9 Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. 10 I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life actually brought death. 11 For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death. 12 So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good.

THE TRUE FOLLOWERS OF YESHUA, THE CHRIST

The Gospel according to Matthew is the opening book of the New Testament of the Bible, and the first of the Four Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The four Gospels are followed by the Acts of the Apostles, the Letters of Paul beginning with Romans, the catholic or universal letters beginning with James, and the Book of Revelation.
The Gospel of St. Matthew is one of the most quoted books of the Bible. Noted especially for Jesus' Sermon on the Mount in Chapters 5-7, Matthew is the source of the Beatitudes (5:3-10) and the Lord's Prayer, the Our Father (6:9-13). Jesus states the Golden Rule in the Sermon on the Mount (7:12). Christ reaffirms the Law of Moses (5:17) and the Commandments of God (19:17-19). Known as the Great Commission, the Gospel closes with Jesus calling the Apostles, "to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded to you" (28:19-20).
The Gospel of Matthew is especially important for it is one of the two Gospels originally written by an Apostle (the other being the Gospel of John). The Gospel of Matthew was possibly written in Antioch, Syria, an early home of Christianity. Indeed, the Acts of the Apostles (11:26) recorded that the followers of Jesus were first called Christians in Antioch.
Matthew's Gospel is directed to an audience steeped in Hebrew tradition. The Gospel of Matthew stressed that Jesus is the Christ (1:16, 16:16) foretold in Hebrew Scripture, our Old Testament, and that the Kingdom of the Lord is the Kingdom of Heaven. For example, Jesus fulfills the prophecies of Isaiah 7:14, that the Lord is to be born of a virgin; and Micah 5:2, that the Lord is to be born in Bethlehem. He was named "Jesus because he will save his people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21). Yeshua, his very name in Hebrew, means "the Lord Saves." Jesus grew up in Nazareth of Galilee and was called a Nazarene (2:23). Jesus calls himself the Son of Man thirty times, fulfilling the destiny of the Messianic figure in Daniel 7:13. He is called the Son of David nine times in the Gospel of Matthew. Just as the twelve sons of Jacob were the origin of the twelve tribes of Israel, Jesus as the Christ chose Twelve Apostles to inaugurate the Kingdom of Heaven.
The Gospel begins with the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the son of Abraham (1:1). Matthew names five women in the Genealogy: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, the wife of Uriah (Bathsheba), and Mary, the mother of Jesus. The genealogy regularly notes the male who fathers a child, but Matthew delivers an exact statement when he reaches Joseph, "the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born" (1:16). The relative pronoun "of whom" in Greek is ῆς, which clearly refers to Mary, for it is specific to the feminine gender! And the passive voice of the verb ἐγεννήθη - "was born" - is the only passive among the forty occurrences of γεννάω in the genealogy, which prepares the way for the divine conception and natural birth of Jesus Christ in 2:1.
St. Matthew records five major speeches of Christ Jesus: the Sermon on the Mount (5-7); the Missionary Sermon to the Apostles (10); the Parables of the Kingdom (13); the Discourse on Life in the early Christian community the Church (18); and his eschatological speech on the End Times (24-25). Upon Peter's statement "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God," Jesus designates the Apostle Simon Peter to lead his Church (Matthew 16:15-19). The name Peter or Πέτροϛ in 16:18 is the same as the word for rock - kepha in Aramaic or Κηϕᾶϛ in Greek. The 'keys to the kingdom of heaven' in 16:19 recalls Isaiah 22:20-25 and indicates the rite of succession to the Steward of the Kingdom.
The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke are called the Synoptic Gospels, as they follow a similar pattern in describing the Life of Jesus and his teachings. Characteristic of all three are the Parables of Jesus. Matthew relates ten Parables on the Kingdom of Heaven, seven of which occur in Chapter 13 and are central to his Gospel. In the Parable of the Wedding Feast, the King remarks, "For many are called but few are chosen" (22:14).
Matthew 18:10 is traditionally cited as biblical evidence of Guardian Angels.
There are elements to Matthew's Gospel that are unique to it alone. The Infancy Narrative of Matthew comprises the first two Chapters and emphasizes the appearance of an Angel of the Lord in a dream to Joseph, the Star of Bethlehem to guide the Visit of the Magi, Joseph's role in the Flight into Egypt before the Massacre of the Innocents, and the return of the Holy Family to Nazareth. Matthew includes the complete Sermon on the Mount in Chapters 5 through 7; and Matthew's description of his becoming an Apostle in Chapter 9:9-13. Matthew is the only one of the Gospel writers to refer to the Church in his reference to establishing Church authority with Peter, and in Matthew 18:17-20 where Jesus concludes "Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them." Parables unique to Matthew include the Weeds Among the Wheat (Matthew 13:24-30), the Unforgiving Servant (18:23-35), the Laborers in the Vineyard (20:1-16), the Two Sons (21:28-32), and the Ten Virgins (25:1-13). The Last Judgement in Matthew 25:31-46 indicates that Christ Jesus cared for every living soul, expressed in the famous quote, "As you did it to one of the least of my brethren, you did it to me" (Matthew 25:40), a quote that supports the theological basis for the dignity of the human person, a core principle of liberty. Following his Resurrection, Jesus gave his Apostles the Great Commission: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:19-20).

There are indications in the writings of the Fathers of the Church (Papias of Hierapolis, St. Irenaeus of Lyons, Origen, Eusebius of Caesarea, and St. Jerome) that "Matthew put together the sayings of the Lord in the Hebrew language, and each one interpreted them as best he could" (Papias, in Eusebius, Ecclesiastical History, III, 39, 16). St. Irenaeus of Lyons in 180 AD wrote "Matthew also issued a written Gospel among the Hebrews in their own dialect, while Peter and Paul were preaching at Rome and laying the foundations of the Church" (Against Heresies Book III, 1:1). Origen about 240 AD wrote in his Commentary on Matthew: "I have learned by tradition that the Gospel according to Matthew, who was at one time a publican and afterwards an Apostle of Jesus Christ, was written first; and that he composed it in the Hebrew tongue and published it for the converts from Judaism" (Eusebius 6:25). Eusebius in 325 AD in his Ecclesiastical History wrote "when Matthew, who had first preached among the Hebrews, decided also to reach out to other peoples, he wrote down the Gospel he preached in his mother tongue" (III, 24, 6). St. Jerome noted that Matthew wrote his Gospel in Hebrew ("Ad Damasum", xx), but said that it is not known who translated it into Greek. It is not known whether Matthew's writings were in Hebrew or Aramaic, for while Hebrew was the formal language of Israel, daily language was in the Western Aramaic dialect of Palestine, as with Jesus and the Apostles. The oldest manuscripts available to us are the Curetonian and Sinaiticus texts of the Old Syriac Gospels, the Greek Codex Sinaiticus from St. Catherine's Monastery on Mt. Sinai, Egypt, and the Codex Vaticanus in Greek from the fourth century AD.
Was Matthew or Mark written first? There must be a reason for St. Augustine and the Church Fathers to have placed Matthew first in the New Testament!

What is the Paradise that Jesus mentions in Luke 23:43? Without knowing if the thief was baptized earlier, he would have still been guilty of the old law by stealing, was the thief's soul saved? (Part Two)

1 Answer

Jesus’ Death and Jesus’ Wording
To answer this we must consider two things: 1) What does the New Testament teach about where Jesus went upon His death? and 2) Is there anything in the wording of Jesus’ promise that helps us narrow its meaning?
On the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came upon the apostles and they declared Jesus as the resurrected Messiah, Peter appealed to Psalm 16 as a prophecy of the Messiah’s resurrection. He quotes verse 10 to say, “For You will not leave my soul in Hades, nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption” (Acts 2:27). Peter then explained that this prophetically pointed to Jesus (Acts 2:29-32). Declaring that David, “spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades” (Acts 2:31). So where did Jesus go when He died? To “Hades” the place of all departed souls prior to judgment. Is this the “Paradise” to which Jesus refers?
On one occasion Jesus told an account of a rich man and a poor man named Lazarus and events that happened after their deaths (Luke 16:19-31). People often call this a “parable,” but it is never identified that way in Scripture. Like Acts 2 it describes all who die (prior to judgment) going to “Hades” (Luke 16:23). Yet, while final sentencing and judgment has not happened to them yet, we are told that there is a separation of the righteous and the wicked. Lazarus went to the region of Hades called “Abraham’s bosom” (Luke 16:22) where he was “comforted” (Luke 16:25). The rich man went to a region “in Hades” called simply “torments” (Luke 16:23). As Jesus describes it between these two areas is a “great gulf” preventing souls from going from one region to the other (Luke 16:26). Since Jesus is said in Scripture to have gone into “Hades” upon His death (Acts 2:31) is it reasonable to conclude that the “Paradise” where Jesus promised the thief “you will be with Me” (Luke 23:43) is the same region of Hades described as “Abraham’s bosom” (Luke 16:22).
Someone might ask, how do we know that Jesus wasn’t talking about “Paradise” in either of the ways Paul or the book of Revelation used the term? Let’s notice Jesus’ wording. He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, TODAY you will be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43, emphasis mine). We noticed in the example in Revelation 2:7 the connection with “the tree of life” and saw that this describes a condition after final judgment (cf. Rev. 20:11-15; 22:14). We should note something that is said to happen before final judgment. In order for the dead to appear before the “great white throne” of judgment (Rev. 20:11), we are told, "…Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death" (Rev. 20:13b-14). It is only after this that the “new heaven and new earth” are said to appear (Rev. 21:1) and “the tabernacle of God” now is said to be “with men, and He will dwell with them” (Rev. 21:3).
The “Paradise” of Revelation 2:7 is a place of eternal life with God after judgment. The “Paradise” of 2 Corinthians 12:4 is the present “abode of God”—something Paul was allowed to see, but no one can enjoy until after judgment (cf. Rev. 21:3). Since Jesus is clearly declared in Scripture to have gone into “Hades” upon His death (Acts 2:27, 31)—yet, “Death and Hades” must be cast into the “lake of fire” before final judgment—if Jesus promised the thief “today you will be with Me in Paradise” He must have been using this term to refer to the region of Hades also called “Abraham’s bosom” (Luke 16:22). We may see from this that “Paradise” should not be understood as the formal proper name of a single place or condition, but as a way of describing a wondrous place of beauty, joy, comfort, and peace—whether that be in the realm of the saved prior to judgment, the present “abode of God,” or the final place where God’s people with dwell with Him eternally after judgment.
Was the Thief Saved?
All of this tells us about where the man went upon his death, but what does this tell us about his soul? Was this man saved? If so, does that mean people can be saved now without being baptized?
We noted above we are not told how this man came to know that Jesus had “done nothing wrong” (Luke 23:41) or that He was a King who would one day “cone into” His own kingdom (Luke 23:42). It is possible, of course, that this man had followed Jesus at some point and then fallen back into sin. The Bible tells us that Jesus’ disciples baptized people prior to His death (John 4:1-2). It is possible this man was baptized by Jesus’ disciples.
It is important to remember, however, that the command to “make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matt. 28:19), did not come until after Jesus’ death and resurrection. Baptism in Christ, by which one is “buried with Him in baptism” (Col. 2:12) and “united together in the likeness of His death” (Rom. 6:5), was not even possible prior to the death of Jesus.
Scripture does not reveal to us the nature and purpose of the baptism Jesus’ disciples performed prior to His death. It may well have been like John’s baptism, “a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus” (Acts 19:4). Jesus’ disciples were teaching men to follow Jesus, but it’s unlikely they were teaching a baptism into Christ’s death. Their baptism, therefore, like John’s would have been a preparatory act, not a baptism into Christ by which one could “put on Christ” (Gal. 3:27).
The Hebrew writer reveals that for a “testament” to be in place there must be “the death of the testator” (Heb. 9:16). This makes it clear that until Christ’s death the New Covenant was not yet in place. When Jesus spoke to the thief on the cross the Old Covenant of Mosaic Law was still in place. If the thief was a Jew, Mosaic Law taught various principles of restitution that were required (Exod. 22:1-4). We are not told if this man had made such restitution or not. If he was an “insurrectionist” his crime might have been against Rome and thus under the jurisdiction of Roman authority to determine guilt and punishment.
Whatever the nature of the man’s crimes—whatever the man’s nationality or past contact with Jesus, Scripture reveals to us something about the authority of Jesus that resolves all questions we might raise. When Jesus healed the paralytic man He explained that He did so, “that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins” (Matt. 9:6; Mark 2:10; Luke 5:24). As God in the flesh, Jesus knew “all things” (John 16:30; 21:17) and “knew what was in man” (John 2:25). He knew this man’s life, heart, repentance, and disposition. He had power to grant forgiveness to whomever He chose.
This does not show partiality on the part of Jesus, it shows that as God He knows man’s heart and has the right to make judgments and extend mercy. This does not dismiss us from our responsibility to do things that were commanded after the New Covenant was established. It shows that God is merciful even to those who least deserve it. The fact that Jesus promised this man that he would be with Him “in Paradise” (Luke 23:43) tells us that his soul was saved. The Bible teaches that we all give account for things done “in the body” (2 Cor. 5:10), not for deeds after the spirit has left our body. If this man was promised the place of comfort in Hades which awaits final judgment, we know that condition cannot be changed after death (Luke 16:26).
We can conclude, therefore that this man’s soul was saved by the mercy and gracious forgiveness of a dying Savior. The lesson to us is if Jesus (while suffering on a cross) was willing to forgive the sins of a man who mocked Him only a short time earlier, we may know that He stands ever willing to forgive our sin if we will only come to Him!

The Three Angels

Harvesting the Earth and Trampling the Winepress

29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.

The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who [k]is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ 31 I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.”
32 And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. 33 I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”
The First Disciples
35 Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples. 36 And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!”
37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?”
They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), “where are You staying?”
39 He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour).
40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the [l]Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus.
Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, “You are Simon the son of [m]Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is translated, [n]A Stone).
Philip and Nathanael
43 The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.” 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
46 And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”
Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!”
48 Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?”
Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”
49 Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”
50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And He said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter[o] you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.

yet we considered him punished by God,
