Preparing the Bride of Christ to Walk Down the isle to Jesus, the Bridegroom

Summary: The Church is called to be Jesus’ “Bride.” But, sadly, not every engagement ends up in a victorious trip to the altar. So how can we prepare ourselves, make ourselves ready, for presentation to our spiritual Bridegroom Jesus?

Matthew 25:1-4, 10 At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps.... (10) But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet.
•• The Church is called to be the radiant bride of Christ! 2 Corinthians 11:2 says, "I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him." The members of Christ's Church are "promised," we are engaged now to Him, for eventual presentation to Him as a perfect bride, a "pure virgin" to be married to Christ in a profound spiritual union.
• Revelation 19:7 The wedding of the Lamb has come, and His bride has made herself ready.
•• It is very important that Jesus’ bride be “ready” for Him. “His bride has made herself ready” (Rev. 19:7) How does the Bride-Church make herself ready for her Bridegroom Jesus?
•• “Oil”! (vss. 3,4,8,9,10) — the anointing of the Holy Spirit. The radiant Bride of Christ will be walking in an abundant anointing of the Spirit of God. Oil in the Scriptures frequently symbolizes this Holy Ghost anointing:
• 1 Samuel 10:1, 6 Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on Saul’s head.... (6) The Spirit of the LORD will come upon you in power.
• 1 Samuel 16:13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came upon David in power.
•• Think of how this Holy Spirit anointing affected our Savior Jesus Christ on earth. In John 1:32-33, as in the other three Gospels, we see Jesus at age 30 being “anointed” [ see Acts 10:38] by the Holy Spirit. Only after that anointing did Jesus perform the “first of his miraculous signs” (John 2:11).
• The Son of God had walked on earth for 30 years without performing any miracles. Then, after His anointing by the Holy Spirit, He began doing miracles (John 2:11), healings, exorcisms, and more.
•• Back now to our main text ... the virgins with the abundant oil of the Holy Spirit went into the wedding banquet.
•• Like the prophet Elisha (2 Kings 2:9), Jesus’ Bride-Church needs to be crying out to God for a “double portion” of His Spirit. Lord, give us more “oil”, please! A double portion!
• The end-time Bride-Church, like the early Church, urgently needs the mighty baptism with the Holy Spirit.
•• Now, how else does the Bridal Church make herself “ready”?
Ephesians 5:25-27 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.
•• Jesus longs for His bride, the Church. What kind of bride?
•• “Holy and blameless”! Like Adam, Jesus will marry a bride “suitable for him” (Genesis 2:18). The spotless character of the bride is to resemble the spotless character of her Bridegroom Jesus.
•• It’s time for each of us to take a character inventory and to address what we find in ourselves.
• Can we say that we are fulfilling Galatians 5:24? — “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.”
•• We must be submitting ourselves daily to the cleansing, washing influence of God’s word (vs. 26).
•• “Radiant”! — holy, washed, Word-filled, blameless followers of Jesus Christ. Imagine the impact of that type of Christian on the world around us.
•• How else does Christ’s bride make herself “ready”?
Revelation 19:7-8 Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear.” (Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of the saints.)
•• This ”ready” Bride of Christ was characterized by “righteous acts”.
•• Christ’s prepared Bride puts her faith into practice. She applies it to all facets of her daily life.
•• I suggest that the Bride-Church read the Bible and hear it preached and taught less for knowledge than for how it can change her life to be and to live more like her Bridegroom Jesus.
2 Corinthians 11:2-3 I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him. But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.
•• The Bride of Christ, this “chaste virgin” (KJV), ready for presentation to Jesus her Husband, is characterized by “sincere and pure devotion to Christ”.
•• Try this self-test: How am I doing on the “first and greatest commandment” — that is, to “love the Lord [my] God with all [my] heart...” (Matthew 22:37-38)?
•• Am I an “Ephesian” Christian (Revelation 2:1-4)? — that is, busy working for the Lord, but forgetting how to love Him.
In closing, I encourage you to pray ... to reflect ... to examine your heart. Ask yourself: Am I indeed preparing myself, making myself “ready” (Rev. 19:7) to be Christ’s Bride? That is...
• Spirit-filled
• Word-filled
• Holy, radiant, and blameless
• Living a life of righteous acts
• Sincerely devoted to Jesus, our heavenly Bridegroom

Fulfillment: Luke 1:50, 58, 68, 72, 78; John 10:17–18; Romans 5:7–8; Ephesians 1:7; Colossians 1:4; Hebrews 2:11–12, 17
This is not a prediction of the Messiah, but a picture that would ultimately be fleshed out in Jesus. The key word here is “redeem.” The term “redemption” is familiar from the book of Exodus (see 6:6) in which God redeems Israel from bondage in Egypt. God continues to be the great redeemer when Israel is in need: “I am the one who helps you, declares the Lord; your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel” (Isaiah 41:14).
Human society also reflected God’s character as redeemer. In each family or clan of ancient Israel, a family member was responsible for “redeeming” others in the clan at various times of need. Leviticus 25:25 speaks of redemption of property, when a family member bought back land that a relative had sold. A relative who had sold himself into slavery was to be bought back (redeemed) by another in the clan. In the book of Ruth, the family redeemer also provides a child in the case of a man who had died without descendants. In the situation that Ruth shows us, the family redeemer was under no obligation to perform the act of redemption, yet he willingly did so.
In the book of Ruth, the idea of chesed, often translated lovingkindness or mercy, lies behind the action of the redeemer (Hebrew, go’el). Chesed implies acting to meet the deep needs of others based on relationship of commitment and covenant. Because of this, it also implies that a more powerful person will be the one showing chesed to one who is weaker, and it is done voluntarily. In the same way, God’s chesed lies behind His acts of mercy on behalf of His people Israel.
In the New Testament, we see the coming of Jesus as an expression of God’s chesed, His mercy:
His mercy is for those who fear him
from generation to generation. (Luke 1:50)
Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. (Luke 1:58)
… to show the mercy promised to our fathers
and to remember his holy covenant. (Luke 1:72)
… because of the tender mercy of our God,
whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high. (Luke 1:78)
Specifically, God’s chesed is shown when Jesus redeems His people:
“Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people.” (Luke 1:68)
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace. (Ephesians 1:7)
… in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. (Colossians 1:14)
Jesus is likewise our family, our kin, like the redeemer in the book of Ruth:
For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he [Jesus] is not ashamed to call them brothers, saying, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.” (Hebrews 2:11–12)
Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. (Hebrews 2:17)
Significantly, like the redeemer of Ruth, there was no obligation on Jesus’ part to redeem us through his death – yet he did so willingly and sacrificially:
For one will scarcely die for a righteous person – though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die – but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ [Messiah] died for us. (Romans 5:7–8)
“For this reason the Father loves me [Jesus], because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.” (John 10:17–18)
Jesus is our redeemer – and even more so, our kinsman-redeemer. He is our kinsman, our family, by virtue of being human as well as divine. And by being born Jewish, he is especially a kinsman to the Jewish people. Perhaps this is why even Martin Buber, the renowned Jewish theologian, could say, “From my youth onwards, I have found in Jesus my great brother” – even though he did not believe in Jesus as the promised Messiah of Israel.
More than that, he is also our redeemer – the ultimate expression of God’s chesed. The book of Ruth ends with a genealogy showing that King David descended from Boaz. And we know that Jesus was himself a descendant of David. Boaz’s act of chesed towards Ruth enabled a greater chesed, for (humanly speaking) he enabled Jesus to be born!

You will flee as you fled from the earthquake[a] in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.
6 On that day there will be neither sunlight nor cold, frosty darkness. 7 It will be a unique day—a day known only to the Lord—with no distinction between day and night. When evening comes, there will be light.
8 On that day living water will flow out from Jerusalem, half of it east to the Dead Sea and half of it west to the Mediterranean Sea, in summer and in winter.
9 The Lord will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one Lord, and his name the only name.
10 The whole land, from Geba to Rimmon, south of Jerusalem, will become like the Arabah. But Jerusalem will be raised up high from the Benjamin Gate to the site of the First Gate, to the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the royal winepresses, and will remain in its place. 11 It will be inhabited; never again will it be destroyed. Jerusalem will be secure.
12 This is the plague with which the Lord will strike all the nations that fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh will rot while they are still standing on their feet, their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths. 13 On that day people will be stricken by the Lord with great panic. They will seize each other by the hand and attack one another. 14 Judah too will fight at Jerusalem. The wealth of all the surrounding nations will be collected—great quantities of gold and silver and clothing. 15 A similar plague will strike the horses and mules, the camels and donkeys, and all the animals in those camps.
16 Then the survivors from all the nations that have attacked Jerusalem will go up year after year to worship the King, the Lord Almighty, and to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles. 17 If any of the peoples of the earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord Almighty, they will have no rain. 18 If the Egyptian people do not go up and take part, they will have no rain. The Lord[b] will bring on them the plague he inflicts on the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles. 19 This will be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles.
20 On that day holy to the Lord will be inscribed on the bells of the horses, and the cooking pots in the Lord’s house will be like the sacred bowls in front of the altar. 21 Every pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be holy to the Lord Almighty, and all who come to sacrifice will take some of the pots and cook in them. And on that day there will no longer be a Canaanite[c] in the house of the Lord Almighty.

The Fall of Lucifer in the Bible
What is the rationale for the conclusion that these latter verses refer to the fall of Lucifer? Whereas the first ten verses in this chapter speak about the ruler of Tyre (who was condemned for claiming to be a god though he was just a man), the discussion moves to the king of Tyre starting in verse 11. Many scholars believe that though there was a human “ruler” of Tyre, the real “king” of Tyre was Satan, for it was he who was ultimately at work in this anti-God city and it was he who worked through the human ruler of the city.
Some have suggested that these verses may actually be dealing with a human king of Tyre who was empowered by Satan. Perhaps the historic king of Tyre was a tool of Satan, possibly even indwelt by him. In describing this king, Ezekiel also gives us glimpses of the superhuman creature, Satan, who was using, if not indwelling, him. (TNDL)

Vision of the Four Beasts

1In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head while on his bed. Then he wrote down the dream, telling the main facts.
2Daniel spoke, saying, “I saw in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up the Great Sea. 3And four great beasts came up from the sea, each different from the other. 4The first was like a lion, and had eagle’s wings. Vision of the Ancient of Days

And the hair of His head was like pure wool.

And came forth from before Him.
A thousand thousands ministered to Him;

Future Prosperity of Judah

14 At the time when Amraphel was king of Shinar,[a] Arioch king of Ellasar, Kedorlaomer king of Elam and Tidal king of Goyim, 2 these kings went to war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboyim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar). 3 All these latter kings joined forces in the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Dead Sea Valley). 4 For twelve years they had been subject to Kedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

TNDL “WHO EXACTLY IS MICHAEL TO THE ETERNAL HEAVENLY FATHER, THE CREATOR THE SUPREME ONE, EL-ELYON, ACCORDING TO YOUR HEBREW BIBLE?”

Let’s look in the Old Testament for some more evidence. In the book of Joshua, we see that Joshua also saw Michael the Archangel. This account also presents a strong case showing that Michael is Jesus: And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? And the captain of the LORD’S host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so. Now Jericho was securely shut up because of the children of Israel; none went out, and none came in. And the LORD said to Joshua: “See! I have given Jericho into your hand, its king, and the mighty men of valor. Joshua 5:13–6:2 This account in the book of Joshua is very important because we can now “nail down” who Joshua saw. Joshua met the captain of the Lord’s host and then we find that it is the Lord! Joshua worshiped Him, and He did not stop Joshua in his worship. In fact, The Lord actually encouraged Joshua to worship Him! This is very significant. In addition, in the next two verses, we see that the “Captain of the host of the LORD” is now called “The LORD”. The original Hebrew word is “Yahweh” (YHWH) which refers to the true God. It is the proper name of the one true God. Thus the Scriptures itself identifies this person, the captain of the host of the Lord, as God or Lord. This being is definitely not a created being! He accepts worship and actually encourages that He be worshipped. In addition, He is identified as the one true God, Yahweh! In Revelation, when John tried to worship an angel, the angel told him not to do that: “And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellow servant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” (Revelation 19:10) We are not to worship created beings. We are fellow servants with the angels, who serve God. Thus, angels will not accept worship. We are only to worship God! So, what Joshua saw was the Lord! Joshua is told that this ground is holy and he is to take off his shoes. He is in the presence of the Lord. Thus, the Scriptures identify this Being as God and He actually accepted the worship and the reverence that Joshua gave Him, which no created being of heaven will do. He actually invited Joshua to worship and reverence Him! We also see that Jesus accepted worship when He was on earth! Many times, Jesus accepted the worship of the people around Him (A few examples: Matthew 14:33; 28:9,17; Luke 24:52; John 9:38; Hebrews 1:6). This Divine Being must be Jesus Himself because Jesus said that no one has ever seen God and that He is the one who has communicated with man: No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him. John 1:18 Joshua had talked to this Divine Being face to face. Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. 1 Peter 1:10–11. It was the Spirit of Christ that has always been communicating with the prophets of old. So, if the Spirit of Christ had inspired the prophets of the Old Testament, then it makes very good sense to say that Joshua talked to Jesus. After all, Jesus is the word of God! Jesus has been the one who has communicated with man. This is why “No one has seen God at any time”. What they saw was Christ! Lets look at it from another prospective. In much of the Old Testament, this Being is identified as the angel of the Lord, but to Joshua, He identifies Himself as the captain of the Lord’s Host! Who is that? Who is the captain of the Lord’s Host? In Revelation 12:7 we see that Michael is the one that led the angel forces in Heaven. And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, Revelation 12:7 Now we find that the angels in Heaven are called Michael’s angels and that Michael leads His angels in battle against Satan! So, we can see that Michael is indeed the Captain of the angels. He is their leader. Putting Joshua 5 and Revelation 12 together, we see that Joshua saw a man who identified Himself as the Captain of the host of the Lord. The man also encouraged Joshua to worship Him and in Joshua chapter 6, He is identified as being the Lord. This agrees with the original meaning we had for Archangel: “chief of the angels”. Thus, He is their commander, the Commander of the LORD’S army in Heaven, the army filled with God’s angels. So, this must be Michael the Archangel, the Captain of the host of the Lord, who is also the Lord! He is a divine being who accepts worship! The Word is the Captain of the Host (TNDL)
